Surface Treatment Quality Inspection: Methods and Standards

Learn about quality inspection methods for surface treatments. Discover visual inspection, thickness measurement, adhesion testing, and documentation requirements.

Introduction

Quality inspection ensures surface treatments meet specifications. At Fulei Metal, our inspection protocols cover all aspects of coating quality.

Inspection Methods

Visual Inspection

First and most important inspection. Checks: color match, uniform appearance, complete coverage, surface defects (orange peel, pinholes, fish eyes), cleanliness, overall quality. Performed under adequate lighting. 100% of parts visually inspected.

Thickness Measurement

Magnetic induction for magnetic substrates (steel). Eddy current for non-magnetic substrates (aluminum). XRF for multi-layer or precision measurement. Calibrated gauges required. Minimum 3-5 points per significant surface.

Adhesion Testing

Cross-cut test (ISO 2409). Tape test (ASTM D3359). Bend test. Impact test. Destructive tests on samples. Non-destructive where possible.

Corrosion Testing

Salt spray (ISO 9227). Humidity (ISO 6270). Cyclic corrosion. Performed on witness samples. Duration per specification.

Hardness Testing

Pencil hardness (ASTM D3363) for powder coating. Micro-hardness for hard anodizing. Hard chrome hardness verification.

Quality Standards

ISO 9001

Quality management system. Documented procedures. Process control. Traceability. Continuous improvement.

Industry-Specific

Qualicoat: architectural powder coating. GSB: German quality standard for powder coating. Qualanod: architectural anodizing. AAMA: American architectural standards.

Inspection Frequency

First Article

100% inspection of all characteristics. Full documentation. Client approval if required. Verifies setup and process.

In-Process

Visual inspection: 100%. Thickness: sample every 10-20 parts. Adhesion: periodic (daily/weekly). Corrosion: periodic (monthly/quarterly).

Final

100% visual. Sample thickness measurement. Verify all requirements met. Prepare documentation.

Documentation

Inspection records: date, part, operator, results. Thickness measurements: actual values at each point. Adhesion test results: rating and method. Corrosion test results: duration and outcome. Certificates: material, process, quality. Reports provided to clients.

Acceptance Criteria

Visual

Color matches approved sample. Uniform appearance. No defects exceeding limits. Complete coverage. Clean surface.

Thickness

Average meets or exceeds minimum. No single point below minimum minus tolerance. No point exceeds maximum. Meets relevant ISO standard.

Adhesion

Cross-cut: Grade 0 or 1. Tape: no coating removal. Bend: no cracking.

Corrosion

Specified duration with no rust. No blistering. No adhesion loss. Per applicable standard.

Conclusion

Quality inspection ensures surface treatments meet specifications and perform as expected. At Fulei Metal, our comprehensive inspection and documentation provide confidence in coating quality.

Inspection Items, Method and Where Acceptance Has to Be Agreed in Advance

Coating disputes are rarely about a test failing. They are about an acceptance criterion that was never agreed. The table below lists the checks and, more importantly, what has to be settled before production starts.

CheckMethod and standardWhat must be agreed in advanceWhy it is worth agreeing
AppearanceVisual examination under agreed lighting, distance and durationA physical reference panel, and the viewing conditionsMost coating disputes are appearance disputes, not test failures
Film thicknessISO 2808, with a magnetic gauge per ISO 2178 or eddy current per ISO 2360Whether the figure is a minimum per reading or an average, and how many readingsThe two interpretations are different requirements
AdhesionISO 2409 cross-cut, or ISO 4624 pull-off for critical workThe acceptance rating or the minimum value in MPaWithout a stated rating, a test result has no pass or fail
CureSolvent rub such as ASTM D5402, or thermal analysisThe number of double rubs and the criterionUnder-cure is invisible at the time and appears as failure in service
ColourSpectrophotometer against a standard panelThe delta E tolerance and the illuminantColour is the most subjective of these; a number removes the argument
GlossISO 2813, commonly at 60 degreesThe geometry and the toleranceGloss readings are geometry dependent and are not comparable across geometries
DocumentationCoating certificate with batch, process parameters and test resultsWhich items appear on the certificateTraceability matters when a batch fails later

One practical suggestion: agree a reference panel. Signed or initialled and kept by both sides, a single physical panel settles the majority of appearance and colour arguments faster than any written description, and it costs almost nothing to produce at the start of a programme.

One addition that pays for itself on repeat orders: a first-article coating sample. Approving a physical part, or a panel processed with it, before the production run begins settles appearance, colour, film build and adhesion in one step, and it gives both sides a reference if a later batch is queried. It costs a short delay at the start of a programme and removes most disputes during it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every batch be tested?

Weight the testing to the risk. Routine jobs need a visual check plus thickness and adhesion on test panels; critical or outdoor structural work justifies full testing and a certificate. Testing everything regardless of risk adds cost without adding assurance.

Who sets the acceptance criteria?

The designer, because acceptance follows from what the part has to do. A fabricator can advise on what is achievable, but a criterion that is not tied to the service duty tends to be either arbitrary or unachievable.

What if a batch marginally fails?

Decide in advance whether the outcome is rework, concession or rejection, and who has authority to concede. Deciding that during production, under schedule pressure, is how marginal parts reach customers.
