Colour Choices That Change the Technical Result, Not Just the Look
Colour is often treated as the last item on the specification. Several of the decisions inside it — gloss level, lightness, texture — have direct consequences for what the coating can hide and how it ages.

Colour consistency is a measurement problem before it is a coating problem. Agreeing a physical standard panel and a colour difference tolerance, expressed as delta E, is what turns a subjective dispute into a pass or fail. Expect some variation between batches and between substrates, and expect a metallic finish to vary with application conditions more than a solid colour does.
One more consequence of colour worth flagging at design stage: dark finishes make imperfections more visible on glossy surfaces and less visible on textured ones, and they make dirt and dust more visible on light colours than on mid-tones. Mid-tones with a satin gloss are the most forgiving combination in service, which is why they dominate industrial enclosures even though darker colours are often preferred at the drawing stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a dark colour make an outdoor enclosure too hot?
It will raise the surface temperature meaningfully compared with a light colour in direct sun. Whether that matters depends on what is inside: sealed electronics, batteries and plastic trims are the usual reasons to reconsider a very dark finish on an outdoor enclosure.
Why does the same colour look different on two batches?
Film build, cure temperature and substrate all shift the perceived colour, and metallic finishes add application conditions on top. Agreeing a standard panel and a tolerance is the only reliable way to control it.
Is a textured finish a way to hide a poor surface?
