How to Choose a Custom Sheet Metal

Choosing a sheet metal fabrication manufacturer in China is a sourcing decision that is usually made once and lived with for years. This page sets out what an overseas buyer can actually verify before placing an order, what cannot be verified remotely, and which questions separate a factory that runs repeat OEM programs from one that only quotes them.

What Can Be Verified Remotely, and What Cannot

A quotation, a website and a video call tell you what a supplier says about itself. Certificates, sample parts and a first article tell you what it can do. The useful sourcing process separates those two categories deliberately, so that the decision rests on evidence rather than on confidence.

The Evidence That Transfers
Dimensional report on a sampleThe strongest single document. It shows whether measured values were taken against a stated requirement, and whether the report is signed and dated.
Material certificateA mill certificate that matches the grade called out on the drawing, traceable to the batch. It confirms the material actually used, not the material quoted.
Process descriptionA supplier that can explain its own route — which operations, in which order, with which checks — understands its process. One that answers only in general terms usually does not.
Audit or certification documentsManagement-system certificates and audit reports, with the certificate number and the issuing body stated so they can be checked.
Photographs of the actual partsProduction photographs of comparable work, which show tooling, fixtures and handling practice rather than a catalogue image.

The Questions That Expose the Gap

  • What is out of scope? A supplier that claims everything — castings, plastics, machining and sheet metal — is describing a trading office rather than a factory. A clear boundary is a good sign.
  • Who owns each operation? If finishing or assembly is outsourced, that should be stated in the quotation rather than discovered later.
  • What happens when a drawing is unclear? The answer should be “we ask before quoting”, not “we assume and adjust”.
  • How is a repeat order kept identical? Look for revision control, a first-article record and a documented route, not for promises.
  • What does the quotation contain? Process route, material, finish, lead time, trade term, packing and what the buyer pays for. A price alone cannot be compared with another price alone.

How to Run the Comparison

The workable method is a paid or free sample of one part on the real drawing, then a comparison of the first-article report against the drawing. That single round tests drawing interpretation, dimensional control, surface quality, packing and communication at the same time. Two quotations can read identically and still produce very different first articles, and this is the only affordable way to find out which one you have.

For the documentation side of the same process, see process control, quality inspection and manufacturing capabilities.

How to Compare Two Quotations Line by Line

Two quotations for the same drawing are only comparable when they describe the same scope. Put them side by side against five lines: material grade and thickness, finish system, inspection documents, packing, and trade term. Differences that look like price are usually differences in one of those.

A quotation that is noticeably cheaper often excludes finishing, assumes a lower grade, or quotes ex-works while the other quotes delivered. A quotation that is noticeably more expensive may include a first article, a dimensional report and export packing. Neither is right or wrong until the scope is the same — which is why asking for the process route in writing is worth the extra email.

Questions Buyers Ask About sheet metal fabrication

Do you accept factory audits?

Yes. Buyers or their third-party inspectors are welcome on site, and the TUV audit report and ISO 9001 certificate held by the company are available for review with their certificate numbers. Tell us what the audit needs to cover so the relevant records are ready.

How do we start with a small order?

Send a drawing and order one part or a small batch. The first article and its dimensional report then become the basis for the larger decision. Prototype quantities below the normal minimum are accepted for this purpose.

What is outside your scope?

Sheet metal fabrication: laser cutting, CNC bending, welding and riveting, hardware installation, coating and plating, assembly and export packing. Castings, forgings, injection moulding and pure machining work are outside it, and we say so rather than quote around it.
